Lessons from the Recent Studies on Negotiation as Applied to the U.S. Public Policy Decision Making Process

Some of the lessons, which are learned from the recent studies on Negotiation and Mediation and currently applied to the US public policy decision making process, are: i) to lower the expectation and goals of negotiation from resolution of conflict, a complete fundamental victory, to its settlement, a partial small victory; ii) to recognize the decision rule of unanimity in every negotiation, meaning, recognition of the veto power of the other party, and recognition of, and willingness to exercise my own veto power; iii) to recognize the necessity of paying attention not only to concern for my own substantive outcome but also to concern for the other party and the desired relationship between them and us.
