A Study on the Korean Adjective Synonym(6): 'Bareuda' / 'Olhta'

1. Native speaker perceives that the meaning of 'Bareuda' and 'Ollita' whicch are adjectives of an inherent language are similar. If we review the Korean dictionaries, we can see that the meaning of 'Bareuda' and 'Olhta' are same or similar. And also, they have circulative definition. We can get the basis of the formation of the synonymic relation, from the above perception. After making 'Bareuda' and 'Olhta' which are adjectives of an inherent language, a synonymous pair according to native speaker's perception, the main problem which should be proved out is foreign features and distinctive meanings of the two words. 2. To solve the problems, first we should define the superordinate concept, which is synonymy which binds 'Bareuda' and 'Olhta' into a synonymic relation, and establish the fundamental meanings of the two words, and then we can clarify the differences of the two words by making clear that they have no internal sharing meanings. 3. The antonym of 'Bareuda' is 'Bittulda', 'Gupda', 'Hwida'. We use 'Bittulda' if a shape, figure, state, property, of an object is deviated from a normal standard and desirable principle. 'Bareuda' is used when it corresponds with a normal or desirable principle. So, the basic meaning of 'Bareuda' is prescribed as 'to correspond with a principle' 4. 'Olhta' and 'Geureuda' make a relation of an antonym. We use 'Olhta', when we value and judge about things and situation, it is reasonable. Therefore, the basic meaning of 'Olhta' is prescribed as 'to be reasonable'. 5. 'The principle' which is related to the basic meaning of 'Bareuda' is nonnal and desirable standard established in one's cognition and social life including form, rule, law, order, act, and standard. 'Reason' related to the basic meaning of 'Olhta' includes duty, morals, justice, ethics, reason, conscience, as true standards what one should do. Therefore, 'Bareuda' and 'Bittu1da' are used when they correspond with the already established standards within one's perception and social system, or not. 'Olhta' and 'Geureuda' are used if they correspond with a reason in accordance with which one judges. Not only a definite principle but also a reason which one realizes in accordance with reasonable decision can be the standard which values the things. Thus, we can prescribe that the superordinate concept of 'Bareuda' and 'Olhta' is to correspond with standards'.
