Vocabulary, in recent years, has assumed a more important role in second language acquisition, especially influenced by the communicative approach, the lexical approach, and the development of corpus-linguistics. A good number of theoretical and experimental studies have been carried out on various aspects of English vocabulary acquisition. As a result, there is a need for review of current trends in order to keep abreast of them. Six topics are discussed: (a) vocabulary knowledge and size, (b) vocabulary acquisition process and mental lexicon, (c) explicit teaching and implicit learning, (d) receptive and productive vocabulary, (e) multi-word items, and (f) vocabulary learning strategies.
