여대생과 남녀공학 대학생의 학교생활 비교 연구

A Comparative Study of Students' School Life between Women's Universities and Co-ed Universities

이 연구에서는 여대생과 남녀공학 여학생, 남녀공학 남학생 등 세 집단의 학교 생활과 만족도를 6개 대학에 대한 참여관찰과 심층면담, 그리고 142명 대상의 서술형 설문조사 결과 등을 토대로 분석하였다. 그 결과 1학년 여대생들은 남녀공학 학생들보다 학과와 동아리에서의 각종 모임이나 행사 참여 기회가 적고 인간관계의 폭이 좁아 학교 생활을 재미없게 여기는 경향이 있지만, 고학년이 되면서 점점 만족도가 높아진다는 것을 발견하였다. 이에 비해 남녀 공학의 여학생 중에서는 고학년이 되면서 만족도가 낮아지는 경우가 높아지는 경우보다 많았는데, 학교 생활의 재미가 줄어들고, 학업부담을 힘들게 느끼며, 장래 보장에 대한 걱정을 많이 하게 되고, 대인관계에 대한 불만이 생기는 등의 이유로 인한 것이었다. 수업 참여도에 있어서는 여대생들이 남녀공학 여학생들보다 성실하고 적극적인 참여(조별 대표 발표나 자발적인 답변 등)를 하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 남녀공학 학생들, 특히 남학생들은 여대생들의 성실하고 적극적으로 수업에 임한다는 것을 제대로 인식하지 못하고 있으며, 여대생들의 옷차림이나 이성·결혼 등에만 주로 관심을 갖는 것으로 오해하고 있었다. 반면에 여대생들은 남학생들의 이성·결혼에 대한 관심을 실제보다 적게 갖는 것으로 인식하며, 정치·시사문제에 대한 대화는 실제 이상으로 자주 나누는 것으로 인식하는 등, 남학생에 대한 환상을 갖는 경우가 많았다.

This study compares students’ school life and level of satisfaction between women’s universities and co-ed universities, based on participant observation and interviews in the six universities and open-ended questionnaire survey of 142 students. One of the major findings is that freshmen of women’s universities tend to be less satisfied with their school life compared to co-ed students, due to less opportunities to participate in diverse activities or to make interactions with other students. However, their level of satisfaction tend to get higher and higher while those of co-ed female students tend to get lower or unchanged as they grow. Female co-ed students tend to find that their school life is less enjoyable when they become sophomore because many male students leave school to serve in the army and the remained male students tend to change their target of interest to new freshmen female students. Female juniors and seniors of co-ed universities tend to realize that their friendship with male students are superficial and less opportunities are given to female students, especially in the recommendation by professors for the job. The students of women’s universities tend to participate more actively in the class compared to female students of co-ed universities. They listen to the lecture more attentively, volunteer to answer questions more frequently, and give presentations as a representative of the team project more frequently. However, the co-ed students tend to have misconception of students of women’s universities, as those whose major interests are fashion/diet and date/marriage, rather than study and career/job.
