A Study on 'War and Feminism' in Hanan al-Shaykh's Hikayah Zahrah(The Story of Zahra)

This thesis aims at studying the issues of gender, sexuality and war which are represented correlatively in Lebanese woman writer Hanan aI-Shaykh's novel The Story cf Zahra(l980). This work is considered to be successful in combining between two main subjects, one of which is associated with feministic reflection on arab women's situation and the other with accusation of the miserable state of the Lebanese civil war. I think that in this work Hanan as a woman writer depicts both of the situations of crisis which her society should have passed due to the hypocrisy and discord rooted in its political antagonism. From the analysis of the novel, the thesis has come to some conclusions. Firstly, the madness of Zahra the heroine of the novel represents the real state of women as the oppressed by men in arab society. Zahra's symptoms of madness before outburst of war are disclosed in her abnormal actions such as silence and withdrawal. Secondly, in this work Hanan shows her creative ability in using the war situation for her hope of emancipation of arab women. Making marginalized Zahra before the war become active woman during the war, Hanan looks forward to women's taking actions to free themselves from the patriarchal bondage. Thirdly, phenomena of chaos and intense change brought by the war to the Lebanese society are shown throughout the work by various motives like withdrawal of normal persons, weakness of Zahra's father, etc. during the war. Such motives are effective to depict concretely the chaotic and devastated condition which the war begets.
