Based on syntactic and semantic asymmetries, this paper shows that in Korean there are two types of object, a non-specific object and a specific object, and that a specific object is base-generated in the spec of VP (cf. Karimi 1996, 2003). We claim that an object gets focus outside VP. In addition, we suggest that only an object with a D-feature undergoes object shift to the outer spec of v from the spec of VP (cf. Chomsky 2001). The D-feature of the object, which comes from overt Case or a determiner, checks the EPP on v. On the other hand, bare nouns can move to the spec of Foc and get a contrastive focus reading. This movement is not involved in object shift, but in an Agree-less Move to the spec of Foe, which is A' -movement and thus induces the reconstruction effect.
