Sexual Scripting of Sexual Behaviors among Adolescent Women Who Have Participated in 'Compensated Dates'

The purpose of this study is to examine adolescent women's sexual behaviors using a model of sexual scripting. Data were collected via in-depth interviews with 12 girls who had participated in 'compensated dates'. Participants had experienced sexual abuse, economic deprivation, and maladjustment or abandonment in their families. Their discourses were analyzed by three levels of sexual scripts. At the level of cultural scripts, Participants indicated that sex with a lover was good and was a means of escaping from an unhappy family life. At the level of interpersonal scripts, the girls claimed that sex was a way to keep a boyfriend. However, at the level of persona! scripts, forced sexual experiences often resulted in feeling confusion, regret, and sexual ambiguity. Because these scripts were often in conflict with each other, it seemed to be difficult for adolescent girls to have positive feelings about their sexual experiences. Girls need to be educated about their rights to their bodies. Narrative work may be a useful strategy to achieve sexual empowerment among adolescent women.
