Lee, Saeng-Keun. 2003. The Acceptability of Attributes in English Noun Compounds. English Language and linguistics 16, 45-64. This paper aims to investigate the acceptability of attributive nouns in noun compounds in English, with particular reference to their number information. The extremely absolute accounts have argued that only singular nouns, but not plurals, can be used as attributive nouns. But there are, in fact, many examples of compounds in English that occur with regular plurals as well as irregular plurals. The paper first reviews and criticizes previous analyses of compounding, showing that they made a number of incorrect predictions. Then it proposes a constraint-based account, where the acceptability of attributive nouns is analyzed to be determined as the result of interactions between semantic and phonological factors. To provide theoretical support for this account, it will also present arguments that the attributive nouns should be analyzed as classifying adjectives.
