The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of applying a literary approach to high school EFL teaching. Students were taught about "conceptual metaphors" and their worksheet answers were analyzed. For this purpose the researcher devised a series of nine worksheets, which were mainly focused on enhancing students' understanding of both Korean and English metaphoric expressions, the process of cognitive mapping, and conceptual metaphors. The results of the student answer analysis revealed that students' knowledge of Korean metaphoric expressions helped the students better understand English metaphoric expressions and conceptual metaphors. The results also showed that awareness of the cognitive process of conceptual metaphor encouraged the students to be more creative and active in their English classes. To conclude, the literary approach proposed here could have a beneficial effect on the teaching of English to high school EFL students.
