The purpose of this study was to investigate whether using English newspapers and magazines as supplementary teaching materials for the present text book could increase students' interest in class and their willingness to take an active part in activities. In this study, the researcher taught classes using the present text books and English newspapers and magazines in turns for 8 weeks so that the students can compare them After the experiment was over, a questionnaire was administered to the students who had taken part in the experiment. Students were asked to indicate how they felt about the classes. Responses were on a six-point Likert scale The survey results seem to indicate that the students consider the present text books as good material for teaching reading skills but lacking in interest and realism. On the other hand, the students rated the supplementary teaching materials highly in terms of interest and realism. In fact, compared with the present text books, the teaching materials that made use of English newspapers and magazines scored better in most of the survey items except 'developing listening skills' The novelty effect and the limited sample should be taken into account, but the results of this study suggest that teaching materials that make use of English newspapers and magazines are worthy of development.
