Hank Morgan, a Connecticut Yankee appears is King Arthur's court of the 6th century, equipped with highly developed new knowledge of the 19th century machine civilization. He starts to reform Arthur's Kingdom in various ways by utilizing the machine knowledge and the Eclipse recorded in the history. But eventually he fails in the reformation, partly because of the deep-rooted power of the Church, and partly because of man ’ s stupidity, ignorance, and brutality. The purpose of the study is to examine and analyze first, how the Church in King Arthur's society has made man into a worm by depriving him of his free will and pillaging him. Secondly, how the Church and the clergy have granted an ordained and sacred right of the King and nobility, encouraging their brutal tyranny against free men. Thirdly, is Hank's view on religion quite synonymous with Twain's? And is Twain an infidel as some critics have pointed out?
