The purpose of this thesis is to examine how the modern Korean novels are succeeded to the former novels and influenced by the West. And this is to examine it especially from linguistic point of view. The former researchers hardly made a special study with a linguistic point of view, in spite that a language is principal in literature art. They are sure to take it for the topic just in the field of linguistics. Therefore this thesis is to focus on that how the language, Korean which is used in the novels of late Chosun(朝鮮), is succeed to the Korean modern novels and changed by the West in them. The purpose of examining the aspects of accession from the former culture and the change by the West in the Korean novels is not to be interested in whether the accession of the tradition or the interruption of it not, but is to get a capital key that comprehends the characters of newly or after this appeared culture. The conclusions are as follows: Firstly, Shinsoseol(新小說) is written in Korean, which means that it successes from the tradition of novel which is mostly written in Korean in the novels of late Chosun. Therefore the vividness of spoken language style in Pansori novel(판소리계 소설), which is one of late Chosun novels, is succeed to Korean modern novels, especially to Shinsoseol. The spoken language style in Shinsoseol is sometimes just used to excite the popular interest of the readers. Secondly, in 1910's most Korean novels begin to be strongly influenced by the West or Japan. Most modern Korean novelists regard the Western modern novel as the model of modern novel. They think that the most important character of modern novel is to describe the interior. They deny the Korean traditional novels, for which it is based on the popular interest in plot or story instead of interior. The Korean novels in 1910's accept abstract written language style, denying spoken language style. After 1920's, the Korean novels slowly begin to get themselves out of the West, and furthermore to investigate the way how they accept both the traditional spoken language style and the Western novel style. Therefore some of them develop to reappear kind of oral communication style utilized in Pansori novel and show another new style not like modern Western novel.
