Korean residents in Japan are said to be the Korean race's hard heritage after the Japanese Imperialists' rule and colonial government in the Korean Peninsula. The researches on Korean residents in Japan were concentrated on their existence related realities so far, and did not examine deeply the rites of passage of life culture, such as the rites of yielding and rearing a baby, the coming-of-age ceremony, the marriage ceremony and the funeral rites, etc. In this paper, the author conducted an on-the-spot survey of three places in Japan, i.e., Ikaino at Osaka, Nara and Hagi at Yamaguchi Prefecture, etc, and examined how much Korean residents in Japan accepted the inherent rites of passage of the Korean race, how to adapt them to the Japanese society and what the actual situation of continuance and changes of the tradition was. For Korean residents in Japan, the Korean race's inherent rites of passage partially kept Korean tradition at the anniversary of the one hundredth day after birth and the first birthday, but most of them were much integrated gradually with the culture of the rites of passage of the Japanese people. Therefore, the author found that 'the rites of passage' at the society of Korean residents in Japan could not be 'the most useful mark' distinguishing them from the Japanese people and the Japanese society. However, it is fortunate that Korean residents in Japan made efforts a little to expand sympathy and understanding on Korean traditional folk culture like the Ikaino Korean Race Culture Festival reproducing various kinds of Korean folk culture. Based on this paper, another study can be made in the future to compare the rites of passage of both groups of Korean residents in Japan, i.e., the Korean Residents Union in Japan and the Pro-Pyeongyang Federation of Korean Residents in Japan, and to compare the rites of both areas, i.e., the areas crowded with Korean residents and remaining areas.
