The Cause of Crime Victimization in Korean Campus：Test of Life-style Theory

In the past, the people did consider campus of university or college as a speculative world；i. e. Ivory Tower. So, nobody thinks that there are street crimes on Ivory Tower. Therefore, though there are many crimes on campus, we don’t know anything about the size or the types of campus crime. The purpose of this study is finding covariates with campus crime victimization. The data used in this study were obtained by a face-to-face interview administered to the university and college students(N=1,005) who did register on 7 universities and 6 colleges(3 universities and 2 colleges in Seoul-metropolitan area, and 4 universities and 4 colleges in another areas). And NCVS interview forms were translated and used. The sample were selected by quota sampling method of which case number were proportional to the college/university ratio, the regional ratio, the academic year ratio, and the sex ratio of the campus population of Korea. The results of analysis show that the proximity to crime and the absence of guardianship have an effect on property- and violent-crime victimization. And the attractiveness of target has an effect on property- crime victimization. These results show that Life-style Theory(Hindelang et al., 1978) is fully supported.
