The vowel rising is a common phonological phonomenon, based on the principle of reducing efforts. It can be confirmed diachronically. This study is based on the synchronic materials of Cheonan dialect and concretely discussed the vowel rising with its classifications. Therefore we can find out several phonological characteristics of vowel rising in Cheonan dialect as below; First. the vowel rising is vertically realized by the classes in vowel system. This is because the vowels of same class form natural class and because of the phonological structure in which point of articulation, and articulator operates upwards and downwards. Secondly, the vowel rising is in the relation of feeding with the horizontal change rules (umlaut. labialization). For example. if we consider 'a -> i' in 'jireongi -> jiringi(earthworm)' and 'a -> u' in 'abeoji -> abuji (father)' as vowel rising, it is diagonally realized. From the variance as 'jireongi-> jirengi -> jiringi', 'abeoji ->abeuji ->abuji(father), we can consider the former as if umlaut opens the way of the vowel rising 'e -> i', and latter seems like to open the way of the adaptation of labialization. Third, the vowel rising is the rising by one phase in degree of aperture. Though they make a vertical class, , 'e -> i, a -> j' changes are not realized. Therefore the characteristics of a vertical 'direction' is the second condition. Fourth, the vowel rising is different from horizontal change in the phonological phenomenon, it is unconditioned variation which is not influenced by adjoining sounds. Finally, the chroneme is related with the vowel rising. Inresult, it brings a restriction into a rising of /a/. This is drawn through 'e->i, e->e, a->a, o->u, o->u' which is a practical type of the vowel rising. Only 'e->i' needs more consideration, and it will be treated later.
