An Analysis and semantic Interpretation of Intonations in interrogative Sentences of Yesan and Dangjin Dialect

In this paper, I examine the semantic interpretation of intonations in interrogative sentences of Yesan and Dangjin dialect of Chungnam province. which shows very typical characteristics of Chungcheong dialect. I think that intonations are very important in diverse meanings of sentences in Yesan and Dangjin dialect. We find that meanings of interrogative sentences are affected by prosodic informations and the sentential meaning can be changed by the speaker's thought and the intonation of sentence endings. It is important that some special phenomenon is found in the dialect of Chungnam province: changes of meanings in sentences by the strengthening of deep tone structures and the weakening of surface tone structures. There is a particular particle -yu (유) which makes very diverse boundary tones: LH%. H%. HL% Intonation phrase boundary tone is very special in the questions of this dialect. It is very tipical that the boundary tone of wh-question is a LH%. It is very tipical that the boundary tone of yes/no-question is a H%. It is very tipical that the boundary tone of affirmative question is a HL%. Finally, K-ToBI convention can be reformed for the good description of sentences of the Chungnam dialect.
