The purpose of this paper is to understand the poetic basis of Saseol Sijo through a close examination of the comic characteristics that permeates the content and formal indices of Saseol Sijo. Accordingly, through an examination of the comic discordance of action/counteraction, this paper has attempted to elucidate the poetic basis of Saseol Sijo that is formed between the impulse of Pyeong Sijo and the impulse of the departure from pyeong sijo. As a result, it was possible to point out the comic characteristics appearing in the indices of Saseol Sijo: its long form and surplus of expression, the repetitiveness and playfulness of its poetic language, and its reversal and evasion of the point in the third verse. The significance of these are as follows. Firstly, looking at thc expressions in which the lengthening of Saseol Sijo is achieved, it was pointed out that the actions expressed are just as exaggerated as the motions of a clown, and thus draw laughter. Secondly, the repetitive mimetic words, which have a action/counteraction characteristics, show the coexistence of the struggle between antinomic desires and this struggle's unconscious craving for life. Thirdly, the reversal function of the third verse of Saseol Sijo was explained in comic terms. That is, the reversal in the third verse deliberately avoids drawing a conclusion based on the expectation of the first and second verses, and thus achieves a typical comic effect. The common points of the comic characteristics seen in these three aspects are as follows. The comic always possesses an opposing impulse, and the repetitive, unending interplay between the two poles signifies that it is alive. From this it was possible to determine that the comic is an objective genre index that thoroughly permeates the content and formal indices of Saseol Sijo.
