The purpose of this study is to clarify the meaning of wikijihak(爲己之學: learning for self-perfection) in T'eogye, to demonstrate its practice in the life of T'eogye, and to suggest its educational implications by examining the contents and editorial history of 『The Analects of T'eogye』. Wikijihak was considered as the purpose of learning in Confucianism, which was discriminated with wiinjihak(爲人之學: learning for self-revelation). The results can be summarized as follows: First, it is confirmed that there are four editions of the analects of T'eogye which are different in their editorial dates and items. this study is based on the edition published by Tosanseonwon composed of 32 chapters and 550 articles(6 books). Second, it is recognized that wikijihak in T'eogye is characterized as learning that pursues propriety and virtue, overcomes the calculation of interests and merits, and aims to be a man of virtue. Thirdly, the practice of T'eogye's wikijihak is characterized as humility, prudence, thrift and righteousness, with reference to four phases of Confucian discipline, (ⅰ)the decision of purpose in life, (ⅱ) the sustaining of reverence, (ⅲ) the investigation of reason, (ⅳ) strenuous efforts Finally, his logic and practice of wikijihak suggest the value and importance of character education in comparison with knowledge-oriented education corresponding to wiinjihak in contemporary education
