The purpose of this paper is to analyze the concept of respect and to examine its meaning and value. Many people think that all or most persons ought to be respected. We can call this belief respect-for-persons principles. These principles have been used to justify various moral rights and duties. But the concepts of 'respect', 'esteem', and 'pride' are confused. Respect, esteem and pride are is a distinctive response to worth. Respect is also distinguished commonly, on one side, from arrogance and servility, and on another, from admiration and affection. Respect is a value term. It is a multifaceted notion involving a group of feeling, attitudes, beliefs, desires, dispositions, commitments, expectations, actions, and emotions that express one's sense of one's worth. In respecting a person one must have a reason for doing so. The basis of respect must be believed to be relatively permanent excellences or abilities of person in question. A person's having excellences or abilities implies that one values them. Respect for persons as persons is to be distinguished from respect for persons are professionals or officials. Some teachers have good traits of character or personality. They may be ineffective teachers, but we can respect them highly as persons. In a sense respect can hold only between equals. Only teachers could respect other teachers as good teachers. Other people could not, since they lack the knowledge of what it is to be a good teacher that is essential to respect. To persuade people to behave morally and to educate themselves is to appeal their self-respect and respect for others. Respect is a central component of human well-being and happiness.
