The production of Undaria, Laminaria, Porphyra and Ulva, the major seaweed species m Korea, has increased annually but the consumption of these seaweeds hardly incresed because their uses were restricted as dried or salted foods. Thus it is important to develop new processed product such as biological active foods, for the effective utilization of these algae. The primary objective of the study is to screen biological activities such as anti -complemetary, heavy metal binding and macrophage stimulating activities of algal polysaccharides and determine of their physico-chemical properties The contents of acid polysaccharides isolated from Undaria, Lamimria, Porphyra and Ulva were 9.0%, 10.3%, 11.2% and 10.8% respectively. The acid polysaccharides of Uloo was heteropolysaccharides which consisted of sulfate(17.2%), gluucuronic acid( 20.0%), xylose, rhammnose, glucose and galactose. Porphyran isolated from porphyra showed the highest anti-complementary activity which inhibited total complement hermlysis more than 90% in comparition with control, and the activity incresed when sulfate content and molecular weight was high. In case of binding capacity of acid algal polysaccharides with heavy rretal( Cd, pb ) in vitro, alginate and fucoidan isolated from Undaria, Laminaria showed effective heavy metals binding abilities and the binding capacity of alginate increased when W/G ratio was high
