Introduction: A 10 Year Experience of Risperidone in Korea

A total of 91 papers on risperidone have been published in Korea, including 21 review articles, 9 preclinical studies, 18 case reports, and 43 clinical trials, since the introduction of this new antipsychotic drug in Korean market. The case reports focused mainly on the adverse effects of risperidone, while the clinical trials concentrated on its efficacy and safety. A review of the clinical trials showed the scarcity of well-designed controlled studies, which examined the optimal dose and compared the efficacy of risperidone with those of other drugs, suggesting the need for double-blind controlled studies to be performed in the future. Furthermore, studies designed to evaluate the efficacy of risperidone in the special populations and to assess the long-term outcome are also needed.
