미국 규준에 비추어 본 우리나라 중학교 영재학생들의 리더십 기술 수준

Needs Analysis of Leadership Develpment Program for Gifted and General Students at Korean Middle School

영재교육이 극소수 학생들을 대상으로 국가적 재원을 투여하는 일임에도 대다수 국민들이 큰 저항을 느끼지 않는 것은 영재학생들을 교육함으로써 이 나라의 미래 지도자를 양성하고 있다는 것에 공감을 하고 있기 때문이다. 그러나 영재학생들이 미래 사회의 리더가 될 수 있도록 그들이 리더로서 갖추어야 할 소양들을 키워주는 적절한 리더십 교육을 제공하지 못하고 있는 실정이다. 미국에서 영재학생들을 위한 리더십 교육 프로그램과 함께 개발된 리더십 기술 검사는 학생들의 리더십 관련 기술의 장단점을 진단해 주는 유용한 도구로서 우리나라 영재학생들을 위해 활용될 수 있다고 판단되었다. 이 검사도구를 한글로 번안한 후 우리나라 중학생들에게 실시한 결과, 본 도구가 매우 신뢰로운 진단도구로 활용될 수 있는 가능성이 확인되었다. 한편 본 검사도구를 미국 학생들에게 실시하여 제작된 규준에 근거하여 우리나라 영재 중학생 및 일반 중학생의 리더십 기술 수준을 살펴 본 결과, 우리나라의 일반 중학생들은 미국의 학생들에 비하여 모든 영역에서 낮은 수준의 리더십 수준을 보여주었고, 우리나라의 영재학생들의 경우에는 미국의 일반학생들과 비교하여 결코 리더십에 있어서 우위를 보여주지 못하였다. 우리나라 학생들은 미국 규준과 비교해 본 결과에 근거할 때 우리나라 학생들의 리더십 계발을 위한 교육 프로그램이 절실히 요구되고 있음을 알 수 있다.

Recently, Korean society started to spend a lot of national resources on educating gifted students. Korean society seems to expect that, by educating gifted students, it is bringing up tomorrows' national leaders. However, many researchers in the areas of gifted education and leadership education claims that gifted education programs include leadership development programs to foster genuine leaders. This study found that Leadership Skills Inventory(LSI) is a very promising diagnostic tool which can be easily linked with leadership development programs. In order to utilize LSI as a leadership diagnostic tool for Korean students. LSI was translated into Korean. Koreanversion LSI also showed it is a reliable measurement in evaluating leadership skills of Korean students. When Korean students were compated to the American norms, which was developed by applying original LSI to American student samples. Korean middle school students showed significantly lower levels of leadership skills than American samples. On the other hand, gifted student samples, who were classified as gifted in Korea, did not show higher levels of leadership skills than American samples, who were not just general students. Results imply that Korean education, as well as Korean gifted education, should develop and apply leadership programs for its young students if Korean society intends to bring up its youngsters to the international leaders in the future.
