This study aims to develop English song materials appropriate for the use of Korean elementary teachers and students, which will make up for the shortcomings of the existing materials These shortcomings were mainly identified as: disagreement between the stress in the language and the beat of the music, lack of rhyming in the words of the songs This study includes a new project in which some prospective and in-service elementary teachers have made a collective attempt to make or remake English songs, while making use of familiar tunes A score of those songs were used in a pilot program in a few classrooms and put forth some positive results; the new words of the songs were particularly favored by the students. Several examples of these songs are presented in this paper, with a brief analysis of their characteristics Next, this study provides the guidelines for devising new English song materials for children, that is, how to write or rewrite the words or remake existing songs Finally, it is suggested that future editions of our English textbooks present song materials more refined both in terms of their words and scores, and from more vaned sources
