Of the body of work published by Otto Jespersen, The Growth and Structure of English (GSE) stands as a seminal achievement on the history of the English language The GSE appears at first to be a mere compendium of detailed data on the development of English Upon closer inspection, however, the book transforms itself into a reference library for students of Contact Linguistics The aim of this paper is to reassess and reappraise the GSE by way of reformulating its contents in the framework of Contact Linguistics in its modem sense (Jespersen's other major works Will also be consulted wherever language contact phenomena are discussed)
