A Study of the Port Cluster in Korea: Theoretical and Empirical Analysis

Recently there has been considerable discussion on the construction of the port cluster from the viewpoint of Northeast Asia's logistical hub policy It seems, however, that the theory of port clusters is not well developed in the academic literature Therefore, this paper intended to derive the determinants of port clusters through extensive analysis of prior literature and then to give some policy implications how to construct port clusters in Korea's major ports The prior literature revealed that the localization and networking factors are meaningful in the relationship between the determinants of the port cluster and Its innovation effects In this paper, empirical survey from port-related industries as well as consultation with port experts were made to set up the model and hypothesis. Then regression analysis was utilized to test the hypothesis whether or not 'innovation' (regarded as the effects of the cluster) is affected by the determinants of port cluster This paper showed that the determinants explain the innovation effects of the port cluster significantly
