One of the common goals for ordinary individuals would be "Eat well and live weJl." If everyone seeks this goal through destructive competition, however, the whole society may suffer a great loss. In this paper, we studied the economic principles and work ethics that are stressed in the Bible. We identified four economic concepts that appear throughout the Old and New testaments of the Bible: (1) diligence, (2) honesty, (3) service, and (4) love. The Bible commands Christians to work diligently and give the poor abundantly. This is the foundation for western capitalism which emphasizes the balance between efficiency and equity. This paper ends with a proposition "Earn honestly and spend rationally" rather than "Eat well and live well".
