This essay has two purposes The first is to compare different aspects of metaphor in Aristotle's Poetics and Rhetoric, while the second is to examine how Derrida reinscribes the traces of metaphor to his reading and critique of the metaphysical thinking m Plato and Aristotle Poetics is a text devoted to the study of principles for constructing the literary artifact, while Rhetoric is concerned with techniques of persuading the audience The difference m the purpose of each text leads to the different conception of metaphor In Poetics, metaphor can only be understood with reference to the hierarchy of parts in tragedy (i e, plot, character, thought, diction, etc), since the poetic treatment of speech has to do with the oiganization of the speech with its arrangement or structure On the other hand, the notion of metaphor in Rhetoric functions as an effective means of persuading audience and conveying information Derrida connects this notion of metaphor to mimesis, and therefore, to Poetics He argues that the whole notion of grounding m the sense of what is proper, ordinary, or appropriate (as opposed to what is extraordinary, unusual) in the metaphor of the sun is itself a part of the whole elaborate figurative system In that sense, Derrida eventually transports semantic aspects of literary language (i e, metaphor) into its metaphysical aspects
