The purpose of this thesis is for looking into the meaning and dualism in Yeon-am's novel. The dualism of Yoen-am's novel, it is caused by the author's unique thinking method about a scholar and the common people and it's limitations and contradictoriness don't remain in negative meaning. He prescribed that a scholar is inability, ideal and they are unproductive existences captured by fiction and hypocrisy. However, it doesn't mean to deny the class of scholar itself. On the other hand, he describes that the common people are faith and they do their best for their own job because they think all legitimate trades are equally honorable. This is also wrong to interpret that as modernistic equalitarianism to abolish the disparity in social standing between a scholar and the common people. The effort to try to find alternative plan for future is the same as a mission for the intellectuals who live the society in transition. Yoen-am also didn't pray silently variance between changing world and refusing change of Cho-sun. His novel is Yoen-am's sign for that. He want to deliver a message through his novel. The message is only the change of the scholar class can save the crisis of Cho-seon and he finds the guide of change in the life of common people. This is the dualism of Yeon-am's novel. Therefore, the dualism doesn't have negative meaning like contradictory attitude and limitations of social position. If you read Yeon-am's novel with this point of view, it would be possible to access newly to Yoen-am. You need close approach to his writing to read Yeon-am's novel. Dualism of his novel and his writing which is summarized as victory and change are another way to understand Yeon-am.
