The Characteristic of Shin Chae-ho's Poems and Direction of His Theory on Poetry

The study on Literature of Shin, Chae-ho had focused on his novels. On the other hand researches on his poems are rare, this is partly because that a few part of poems are existed and no essay on poetry is existed; Only 6 pieces of Free verse, 5 pieces of Shijo(時調), and 18 pieces of poems in written Chinese are remained. So to reconstitute his theory on poetry, I investigated characteristics of his poems. From this investigation, I could bring to following conclusions. First, in his poems both in Korean and written Chinese, there are no evidence for modification of form and intention of enlightenment. In other words, he had no attempt to modify forms of Korean poetry. Second, comparing with poems in Korean, his poems in written Chinese expressed thought and emotion in indirect and embroidered way. Third, his poems both in Korean and written Chinese are worthy of significance in history of literature. Because both of them are not light literature, in spite of the situation that literature in written Chinese are losing literary position. Fourth, his free verses in Korean had some kind of rules of versification without any intention for modification of poetry. On the basis of this investigation, I draw some assumption about his absent essay on poetry. Briefly speaking, the core of deduced theory is in the classical division of poetry and song(歌). His free verse in Korean had created as a kind of song not poetry. This conclusion can be partly proved by existence of statements and verses in his novel Dreaming Heaven. In this way he could have significant accomplishment in Korean history of literature. In some means, his verse can be upvalues than new poems intentionally tried by Choe Nam-sun.
