Romantic Elegance of Urban Streets Revealed in Lee Jeong-bo's Sijo

This study has elucidated that Lee Jeong-bo's Sijo (a three-stanza Korean lyric) literature was formed on the basis of the entertainment culture of Seoul streets at the time when he led an active literary career, and examined the aspects of urban romantic elegance revealed in his works. Lee Jeong-bo enjoyed then Seoul's city culture leading a life full of romantic elegance. Through such a romantic life, he accepted melodies of urban streets and took the lead of changes in the city. Besides, in these scenes of romantic elegance, he performed music and recited poems. In the process, he created a number of lyrics. It is also identified that he created lyrics pursuing erotic pleasure and amusement as well as popular poems depicting longing and affection in these romantic spheres. In his works, entertaining characteristics of urban area were deeply reflected. Through concrete analysis of his works, it is closely examined that such trends as pursuing secular materialism, dilettantism, sensual pleasure and sportive amusement were well brought out in his lyrics.
