칼 폴라니의 제도경제학과 시장사회 비판 : 60주년에 다시 읽는 『대전환』

이글은 폴라니의 주저 『대전환』을 중심으로 그의 제도경제학 및 시장 사회 비판의 기여와 의의를 살피고, 그 공백에 대해서도 지적한다. 폴라니는 경제의 실제적 의미와 형식적 의미, 착근된 경제와 이탈된 경제를 구분하고, 실체적 의미와 착근된 경제의 개념을 중심으로 급진 제도경제학을 구축하였다. 그는 시장 사회가 핵심 구조에서 노동, 토지, 화폐를 무리하게 상품화시킨 내적 모순을 가지고 있다는 것, 그 진화는 시장 논리의 확장과 사회의 대항적 보호논리간의 이중 운동 속에서 진행된다는 것, 19세기의 자기 조절적 시장 유토피아의 실험은 이중 운동의 역사 끝에 실패로 끝날 수밖에 없었음을 밝혔다. 경제와 사회의 이분법을 깨트리고, 경제적 조절 원리를 중층적으로 제도화된 것으로 파악하여 시장을 사회속에 재착근시키고자 한 것, 그럼으로써 인간의 삶의 경제와 생태적 경제를 복원, 발전시키고자 한 것, 여기에 폴라니의 지대한 공헌이 있다. 그러나 폴라니의 제도경제학에는 여러 공백과 결함이 보인다. 소유론의 빈곤과 자본 비판이 없는 시장사회 비판, 보호적 대항 운동에서 반성적 계기의 결핍, 자본주의 발전 양식론과 다양성론의 결핍, 경제적 현대성에 대한 이해의 애매성 등이 그러한 것이다.

This essay is to assess the legacy of Karl Polanyi's institutional economics and his critique of marker society, particularly focusing on his masterpiece of "The Great Transformations". His contributions can be found to show that the market society had the deep inner contradictions to make labour, land, money into fictitous commodities, that the marker society was transformed by the double movement of two opposing forces, ie the expansion of disembedded market versus the protectionist countermovement of society , that the experiment of self-regulating market utopia m the 19th century was doomed to failure m the end Karl Polanyi broke the dichotomy of economy and society and proposed the new vision of socialism to reembed the market within society to us. On the other hand, His institutional economics has some voids and weaknesses as follows the absence of the theory of property and the critique of market society without the critique of capital, the poverty of discourse reflective moments in the protective countermovement against market, the shortage of theory of capitalist growth regime and diversity, and the ambivalences in his understanding of economic modernity
