Several Traits of Character Manipulation in Yeonam's Prose

학계는 최근 산문에 대한 연구가 답보 상태에 빠져 있다. 연암 박지원과 같은 탁월한 산문작가의 작품에 대한 연구도 예외가 아니어서 큰 진전이 없는 상황이다. 새로운 연구 방법론의 모색이 시급한 실정이다. 새로운 연구방법론은 산문 작품의 새로운 글읽기에서 출발해야 한다. 본 논문은 산문연구의 새로운 모색을 위해 글읽기에서 출발해야 한다는 점을 주장하고, 이를 위해 연암 박지원의 산문 작품을 읽는 것에서 그 예를 제시하였다. 문학사에서 연암만큼 문자에 대해 지속적이고 집중적 관심을 보인 문인도 드물다. 연암의 문자에 대한 관심은 그의 문장에 문자를 어떻게 운용했을 것인가 하는 실천적 문제로 현실화 되었을 것인데, 이를 몇 개의 산문 작품의 구체적 분석을 통해서 증명하였다. 본 논문에서는 연암이 어떤 문자를 의도적으로 사용하여 작품 전체의 주제사상을 드러낸 것을 따져보았는데, 특히 '際'라는 글자를 어떻게 운용하고 있는가를 살폈다.

Debates and criticism on the genre of prose, including works of a leading prose writer such as Yeonam(燕巖) Park Ji Won(朴趾源), have recently been inactivated and stagnated. The probe into a new methodology of prose is urgent. A new methodology should begin with a new reading of prose. This paper aims to argue that the new methodology of prose is a new reading, exploring Park Ji Won's prose as an exemplary model. In the history of literature, Yeonam concerned himself with characters more consistently and intensively than any other writer had ever done before. Through the scrutiny of several prose works, I have proved how his interest in characters was practically manipulated and realized. This paper focuses upon analyzing how Yeonam reveals the theme of his prose itself through his intentional use of a character, especially Jeh(際).
