A Study on ECM Infinitive Structure

This study considers the characteristics of ECM (Exceptional Case Marking) structures and attempts to capture the relationship of matrix predicate and embedded clause. I claim that an ECM infinitive is a proposition and has tense meaning related to the matrix tense. Morphological features of T in ECM infinitive can be correlated with its semantic properties and expressed in the course of the derivations of narrow syntax. The relationship of tense in ECM infinitival structure and the matrix verb with their semantic and syntactic features is explained. By removing an unnecessary feature in Tdef of ECM infinitives in Chomsky's (2000, 2001) Agree theory, I re-analyze ECM structures with the assumption that Tdef in ECM infinitives has an EPP feature syntactically and a [proposition] feature semantically. The analysis of Tdef proposed in this paper shows the connection of matrix tense and the tense of embedded clause.
