It has been recognized that the learner's motivation increases in MALL settings. However, many recent studies disclosed that the novelty of technology is no longer a leading motivational factor. In this light, the present study examines how MALL contributes to increasing the learner's motivational by investigating the effects of using a movie CD-ROM in teaching English. The subjects of the study consist of fifty four students who enrolled in Screen Media English. The questionnaire was distributed to inquire students' background and students' attitude toward CD-ROM-based instruction, whether students used the various functions of the CD-ROM title, and what conditions students consider important to make CD-ROM-based instruction effective. The result of analyzing the students' responses indicated that the novelty of technology played an motivation factor for early period of the course, but its effect did not last long enough to motivate students. Interactive and the Internet-based activities must be integrated with the instruction. Several pedagogical suggestions are made for the future research.
