A study on the development of the evaluation criteria and model for multimedia courseware.

The availability of hardware and appropriate software, and effective teaching methods are the most significant factors in the successful implementation of multimedia in foreign language teaching and learning (FLT/L). Almost all universities and even schools now have well-equipped computer or multimedia labs with some software or courseware in Korea. However, it is reported that the majority of teachers and students do not use multimedia in the language classroom since there are not enough and appropriate materials for FLT/L. It must be true that the effective use of multimedia courseware through proper evaluation and selection is now the most important factor in its successful implementation in FLT/L. The purposes of this paper are, therefore: 1) to investigate the current courseware evaluation criteria and checklists; 2) to devise and produce a standard set of criteria for multimedia courseware evaluation; 3) to provide teachers or evaluators with how to carry out the evaluations. In particular a comprehensive set of evaluation criteria and a model of evaluation checklist that can be used for the effective courseware selection have been developed.
