This article examines the differences in effectiveness of 3 types of word lists- bilingual, monolingual, and "bilingualised" (semi-bilingual) in the retention and production of new words. This study also investigates the interaction between the effectiveness of 3 types of word lists and the participants' English proficiency. The participants were 121 EFL college students. They were divided into three groups, and each group was given one of the three types of word lists. After studying the words in the list for a total of 20 minutes, they were tested on the retention and production of the words. Results show that the "bilingualised" word list was the most effective in the immediate retention and production of new words. In the delayed retention and production of the new words, both the "bilingualised" word list and the bilingual word list were found to be effective. This study also shows that there is no interaction between the effectiveness of the 3 types of word lists and the participants' English proficiency. Based on the findings of the study, implications for instructional practice are also discussed.
