The present study aims to investigate effects of L1 intonation on the intonation of Korean English speakers by comparing the focus realizations of English speakers with those of Korean speakers. Two types of experiments were designed: The first experiment was a production test, which deals with the realization of focus in English yes-no questions. The second one was a perception test of intonation patterns in English. The results from the two experiments show that English yes-no questions produced by Korean speakers were characterized by absence of low tone and emergence of sharp rise. These intonation patterns shown in English utterances of Korean speakers turn out to be significantly different from those of English speakers. They were more likely to be the focus realization patterns in Korean. Furthermore, the results from the second experiment reveal that the majority of Korean speakers were not able to identify the focused word in yes-no questions. The findings of the present work are important as they present systematic data regarding how the L1 (Korean) intonation system affects L2 (English) intonation patterns.
