England seems to have failed to value foreign language skills or recognize the contribution they make to society, to the economy and to raising standards in schools. This failure has led to a cycle of national under-performance in foreign languages, a shortage of foreign language teachers beyond schooling and a workforce unable to meet the demands of a global economy. The Department of Education in England has felt the needs to change the attitudes of people toward foreign languages and to inspire people of all ages to learn foreign languages throughout life. Therefore, the Government made innovative policies and strategies to enhance the level of foreign languages of English people in recent years. This study aims to analyze policies and strategies of foreign languages education issued lately in England. The strategies and policies of England are characterized by early language learning, the improvement of transition from primary to secondary schools, increasing the supply of teachers with language expertise, working in partnership of schools and teachers, maximizing the potential of ICT and e-learning, and support of employees in gaining language skills for economic competitiveness.
