This study aims at identifying the differences in the realization of intonation types and sentential rhythm found in the verbal utterances spoken by Korean and American elementary school students. For the purpose of this study, six students in the 5th grade of a Korean elementary school and 4 same-aged native speakers were sampled. Short conversational texts including 6 basic sentence patterns were sampled from an English textbook. The subjects' utterances were recorded in a digital audio tape to be analyzed comparatively using a sound analysis program The overall conclusion is that Korean elementary school students implement, almost regardless of the sentence types, half as much pitch fluctuation as the American elementary school students, resulting in the very weak realization of sentential rhythm and intonation.
