Chunking in Foreign Language Learning

Ability to use language has long been viewed to be based on knowledge of language structures. Lexicalists, however, have recently proposed that grammaticalized lexis in the form of chunks, rather than discrete knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, is the basis of language. This paper examines some first language chunk data categories and compares them with chunks produced by Korean learners of English. It also identifies the differences between native speaker chunking and foreign language chunking, leading to a discussion of the pedagogical implications implied in these differences.
