The Educational Effects of Class Size in Korea

학급규모가 교육효과에 어떤 영향을 미치는가를 실증적으로 검증해 보기 위해 이 연구는 국내외에서 수행된 학급규모의 교육효과에 관한 선행 연구를 분석하였으며, 학급규모의 교육효과를 학업성취도에 미치는 영향과 학급 운영 측면과 관련하여 조사ㆍ분석하였다. 연구결과, 소규모 학급의 학업성취도에 대한 효과는 거의 나타나지 않았으며 일부 지역의 학교에서는 대규모 학급의 성취도가 중규모 학급이나 소규모 학급보다 높게 나타나기도 하였다. 실업계학교에서만 학급규모와 학업성취도간에 관련성이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 학급규모와 교육효과와의 관계에 관하여 교원과 학생이 어떻게 인식하고 있는지를 조사한 결과, 교사와 학생 모두 현재 학급규모에 불만족하고 있었으며, 학급규모가 학생들의 학업성취에 영향을 미치는 중요한 요인으로 소규모학급은 교사와 학생간의 상호작용을 원활히 하고, 적극적인 수업참여가 가능하게 하는 등의 장점이 있다고 인식하고 있었다. 비록 학급규모가 학업성취도에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 밝히지 못하였지만, 학급규모는 교수-학습활동과 효율적인 학급운영에 있어 여전히 가장 중요한 요인이라는 것은 분명한 사실이다. 따라서 이 연구를 계기로 학급규모의 교육효과에 관심을 촉발하고 이에 관한 보다 엄밀한 연구가 앞으로 지속적으로 수행되도록 해야 할 것이다.

The purpose of the study is to analyze the educational effects of class size in Korea. The effects of class size were analyzed by two methods; analysis of class size effects on student achievement and teacher and student survey on effects of class size. Analysis of class size effects on student achievement showed that class size did not affect student achievement in general, even though class size effects were identified in certain school levels and certain areas. Exceptionally, only the vocational high school showed class size effects on student achievement in many cases. In the survey, teachers indicated class size as the most important factor to achievement and emphasized teacher's professionality. Meanwhile, students expressed low priority to class size and emphasized school management pattern. Many teachers responded more interaction between teachers and students, more concern to individual student and more active participation in discussion and learning activities as an advantage of small class. In conclusion, class size is still important for more active teaching-learning activities and efficient class management, although class size effects on student achievement were not identified satisfactorily. In order to reach a firm conclusion on class size effects, a more precise study in this field should be continued.
