콜즈(R. Coles)의 도덕성 이론의 실천적 적용 방안에 관한 연구 - 초등학교 도덕교육을 중심으로 -

도덕교육은 궁극적으로 아동의 훌륭한 인격 형성을 그 목적으로 한다. 그런데 현재 도덕교육의 실태를 분석해 보면 아동의 삶과 유리되어, 인격형성에 크게 기여하지 못하고 있기 때문에, 아동의 삶을 반영하는 도덕교육이 되어야 한다는 지적이 많다. 아동의 삶을 반영할 수 있는 구체적인 방법은 실제 수업이 이루어지는 교실 장면이다. 수업은 아동들의 삶의 변화가 순간마다 일어나는 공간이다. 그러면 어떻게 수업의 변화를 가져올 수 있을까? 이에 우리는 아동의 삶의 변화를 모색한 콜즈 (R. Coles)의 이론적 특징을 검토함으로써 구체적인 실천방안을 모색하고자 한다. 콜즈는 도덕교육의 궁극적인 목적은 삶의 변화이다. 따라서 학교는 아동의 일상적 삶에 관심을 갖고 도덕적 민감성, 상상력, 공감능력을 향상시키는데 관심을 가져야 한다. 도덕교육의 방법은 문학교육, 봉사학습 등 다양한 것이 가능한데, 특히 가정, 학교, 사회가 도덕적 삶의 환경을 조성하는 것이 중요하다. 콜즈 도덕성 이론은 도덕성에 대한 체계적 접근을 토대로 하여 가정, 학교, 사회가 실천해야 할 영역을 제시하고 있는 점이 한국의 초등학교 도덕교육의 구체적인 실천 방안에도 기여하리라고 본다.

Robert Coles is a child psychiatrist, professor at Harvard University, and anthor of more than fifty books. He is best known for his explorations of children's lives and books that explore their moral, political, and spiritual sensibilities. Coles has fully appreciated the ability of even relatively young children to pose questions about the meaning and moral significance" of life. And In their reactions to the events and circumstances of everyday life, he has found that children possess a keen moral sensitivity to ideals and values, to what is right and wrong, and to the reasons underlying what people do, feel, and think. All the same, Coles finds that children have a different "moral notice" than adults -- the issues and circumstances they find morally compelling tend to be directly linked to their everyday lives. "Children know and favor the concrete," he finds, and "an abstract moral issue is hard for them to comprehend as thoroughly real and pressing. Coles insists that his subjects' stories, not his own theories and preoccupations, are of central interest. Too much psychiatry is based, he contends, on the elitist notion that only the therapist can discern the true story, while the patient dodges and evades the truth. In contrast, Coles says that he has "tried primarily to convey or evoke the thoughts and feelings of others. So he insist that we learn our most lasting moral lessons through stories. Storytelling, in the form of both personal narratives and the established literary tradition, gives us a fuller understanding of ourselves and the experiences of others. And Education is not only a function of books, but a function. And Parents and Teacher try to give experience moral development. In this way, school comes to "the circumstances of crises", which have lowering of morality children. Thus, we have to take all social need of about student. So We proposed the concrete method to build moral community in school and in classroom. And we sure that cole's moral development education is expected to solve a problem in crises in school.
