The purpose of this paper is to study the ancient meaning of Zhong[宗] in persons' names and to look into changes of their meanings. The meanings of meaning-borrowing used in place names, people names, and title names of ancient times are the proper words. Thus, it is very important to reconstruct the ancient meaning and to understand its aspect of changes for the study about history of Korean language. On the studies of the correspondence ‘宗 : 夫’ in names mentioned in 「三麥宗或作深麥夫」, 「居柒夫或云荒宗」, 「異斯夫或云苔宗」, they have considered ‘夫’ as meaning-borrowing until now and read it as ‘마라’ which means ‘宗’ in middle Korean. This paper examines in the Ancient Korean data the examples of ‘*mVrV’ type which means ‘宗’ in ancient times and makes out the word form as ‘*pV’ assuming ‘夫’ is the sound-borrowing. In other words, we understand the coexistence of ‘*mVrV’ type and ‘*pV’ type in the ancient meaning of ‘宗’ in people names, and consider the meaning and changes of sound-borrowings ‘輔ㆍ福(/卜/伏)ㆍ巴’ which is used as different writings of ‘夫’ in the Ancient Korean writing by borrowing Chinese characters.
