The Research Trends of Korean Lifelong Education Represented from the Academic Journals

본 연구의 목적은 한국 평생교육학 연구의 역사와 연구동향을 분석하는 것이다. 이 연구의 주요 내용은 첫째, 지난 50 년간 한국 평생교육학의 발전 과정을 연구물을 중심으로 고찰하고, 둘째, 연구동향 파악을 위해 주요 학술지의 논문들을 분석하며, 셋째, 이를 바탕으로 한국 평생교육학 연구동향의 주요 특성들을 고찰하고 학문 발전을 위한 과제를 제시하는 것이다. 연구동향을 분석하기 위해 문헌조사와 연구물 분석방법을 사용하였으며, 한국 평생교육 분야의 대표적인 학술지 세 개에서 총 395 편의 논문을 선정 분석하였다. 연구영역을 총 10개 영역으로 유형화하였으며, 분석 결과 평생교육 프로그램에 대한 연구가 가장 많았고 평생교육학 학문연구와 방법연구가 가장 취약한 것으로 나타났다. 현재 한국의 평생교육은 급속한 성장기에 있으며, 평생교육법의 출현으로 평생교육 활동의 공급과 수요는 그 어느 때보다 양적으로 급증하였다. 그러나 현장에 초점을 두도록 급속하게 교육실천의 요구가 팽창해왔는데 비하여 연구 활동은 충분하지 못하였다 는 평가가 본 연구에서도 입증되었다. 평생교육학 영역에서 많은 연구물이 쏟아져 나왔지만, 아직 평생교육학의 제반영역을 체계화하는 작업은 미진한 상태에서, 본 연구는 한국 평생교육학 연구를 체계적으로 분석하여 그 특성을 제시하고 학문적 발전을 위한 제언을 하였다.

The purpose of this study is to analyze research trends of lifelong education by investigating research papers published in Korean academic journals and to identify the characteristics of Korean lifelong education studies and its future direction. To investigate the research trends of the journals, we categorized the research papers into the ten research areas. From the three representative journals in lifelong education, 395 articles were selected and analyzed. From this analysis, we could find that 'lifelong education programs and educational processes' was the most popular area, while 'lifelong education study and methodology' was the least concerned one. Based on the research trends, the main characteristics of Korean lifelong education research could be suggested as follows. First, the academy of the Korean lifelong education is still practice-oriented. But recently, the quality of papers is making progress from a level. of general surveys on the realities to an indepth research study. Second, the research topics and problems of the papers have become more specific and various. Third, the concerns on 'learning' and 'learners' I have been rapidly increased since 2000. Fourth, even though it was not deeply examined in this study, it is apparent that the papers on research methodology were scarce in numbers. Fifth, academic journals are functioning as a place for debate and discourse. It provides learning opportunities for the scholars by sharing different perspectives on the same lifelong education phenomena Sixth, research papers on "lifelong education studies" are few in numbers compared to any other areas. We could conclude that while the lifelong education needs have been greatly expanded and more practical applications were demanded in Korean society, the academic supports to lead the practices were not sufficient. Therefore, further research efforts should be given to the field of "lifelong education studies."
