A Scheme of High Value-added Strategy of Port-related Industries in Busan

This paper tries to review a new industry for upgrading the competitiveness of Busan port facing a fierce competitive era among major ports. To survive in this circumstance, Busan port needs to build a new strategy for highly value-added activities beyond a mere handling of container cargoes and a place passing through the port. This study made questionnaires to ship operators and identified as follows: ① it recommends building ship repair complex, ship supplies center, ship refueling base, and tools and materials logistics center for shipbuilding, ② our government will have to support tax reductions and institution improvements for the industry, ③ a special law for alien workers needs to be enacted to provide stable employment of port-related industries, ④ joint marketing and public relations needs to be strengthened for the easy penetration of overseas markets and the formulation of A/S network, ⑤ mutual utilization of information based on e-biz, DB and e-marketplace will be constructed to serve the reduction of lead time, the prevention of over-inventory and the ease of information oriented to users.
