The Educational Value of <the Story of A Good Cow in Seonsan> & Ways to Use the Story as Teaching Material

<The Story of A Good Cow in Seonsan(선산 의로운 소)> is currently put on Korean textbooks for elementary students. The story is found in <the Life of Seonsan Good Cow(선산 의우전)> and <the Picture of Seonsan Good Cow(선산 의우도)>. The purpose of this study is to recognize the educational value of the story and to seek ways to use the story as teaching material, after examining <the Life of Seonsan Good Cow>, the original of <the Picture of Seonsan Good Cow>, and other stories featuring cows. Chapter 2 reviews types of good cows and the literary educational value of <The Story of A Good Cow in Seonsan>. The types of good cows are as follows: a cow fights against a ferocious tiger and saves its owner, and later ends its life when the owner dies; a cow fights against a ferocious tiger sacrificing itself and saves its owner; a cow fights a ferocious tiger and saves its owner, killing the creatures injuring the owner, like the cow during the Qing Dynasty of China; a cow comes back to its old owner's house, and dies mourning over the death of the old owner; a cow kills its owner because the owner forsakes the cow. The first, second, and third stories narrate about a good cow fighting against a tiger. The fourth story does not contain a fight between a cow and a tiger, but does a story about a cow repaying the owner's kindness. The last one features a cow punishing its ungrateful owner. The literary educational value of <The Story of A Good Cow in Seonsan> and <the Picture of Seonsan Good Cow> is as follows; First, in terms of theme, the author gives impression and a lesson to the readers and reminds them of true loyalty, showing the loyalty of a good cow to its owner. Second, the storyline of <The Story of A Good Cow in Seonsan> is composed mainly of incidents, which satisfies children's instinct of curiosity disliking complication. <The Picture of Seonsan Good Cow> is made up of eight pictures. Painted classical subject matters can attract readers' interest and the value of the work is quite high. Third, the story can make it possible to feel the realization of unreality that a cow, exercising supernatural power, defeats a tiger. This can stimulate learner's imagination. Fourth, the story of repaying kindness can remind learners of the meaning of doing a favor and repaying for the kindness. Fifth, <The Picture of Seonsan Good Cow> makes it easy to approach towards author's consciousness, circumstances of the time and the relevancy between characters and incidents. Chapter 3 examines the value of <The Story of A Good Cow in Seonsan> as a requital story First, attitude respecting life can be seen in the fighting scene where Ginyeon(기년) and the good cow fight against the tiger for each other without caring for their own life. This is the product of trust and justice of a man and an animal. Second, when a creature receives favors then it always pays back the favors. This stresses requital of a favor through a good cow. Third, the meaning of requital underlies the loyalty of a cow which serves its owner transcending life and death. Fourth, the act of requital shows that there are always cause and effect in the formation and change of things, and that when there is a cause, there is an effect. Fifth, the story is a learning material appropriate for children's development stage. The story can provide behavioral standards for, in particular, sensitive elementary students through traditional values and wisdom, and widen their imagination. In Chapter 4, in terms of presenting teaching plans for ‘swimteo’(쉼터) activities, this paper comes up with ways to actively utilize the <The Picture of Seonsan Good Cow> put on the textbook. Those ways include making a story, drawing up questions, filling out thoughts and words and drawing a mental image, using <The Picture of Seonsan Good Cow>.
