'楸哥嶺' 지명에 관한 지형학 및 역사지리적 해석

Interpretation of Place Name 'Chugaryeong Pass' from the Viewpoint of Geomorphology and Historical Geography

본 고에서는 현재까지의 지형학 및 역사지리 문헌 분석을 통하여 추가령 지명이 갖는 장소적, 지역적 실체에 접근하였다. 추가령은 근세이전까지 京元街道의 하나로서 상인과 여행자의 통행이 있기도 하였지만 인접한 철령에 비해서는 미약하였으며, 협곡이라는 지형적 조건으로 인해 주로 관방과 봉수 기능이 강하였다. 楸哥嶺의 ‘楸’는 가래나무를 뜻하는데, 가래나무는 한랭습윤한 기후하에서 잘 자라는 활엽수로서 한반도 중부 이북의 내륙 산간 지역을 중심으로 분포하고, 역시 ‘楸’ 지명도 유사한 분포를 하고 있음이 확인되었다. 추가령 일대는 지형학적으로 일종의 곡중분수계를 이루는데, 추가령의 실제 위치는 북동부의 안변 남대천의 두부침식에 의한 개석곡의 급경사 단애면 상에 있으며, 실제 분수계는 보다 남서쪽에 위치하고 있음이 밝혀졌다. 조선시대에도 일부 사람들은 추가령과 분수계를 구분하여 인식하였음을 三防鎭 고지도에서 확인할 수 있었다. 이 때 분수계라는 지명은 고유명사로서 사용되었던 것이며, 이러한 용례는 한반도의 이곳에서만 관찰된다. 일제시대 이후, 추가령에는 철도가 통과하고 신작로가 개설되면서 인근의 철령을 대신하여 서울과 원산 간을 연결하는 주요 간선으로 부상하게 된다.

In spite of the reputation and some geomorphological researches, there have been few etymological studies about the geographical meaning of the Chugaryeong Pass, This study deals with the identities of the place, by bibliographical works on geomorphology and historical geography of the Chugaryeong and Chugaryeong Rift Valley, Traditionally, Chugaryeong Pass have been used as Seoul-Wonsan main national road until last Chosun kingdom. At above times, the Pass has been mainly used more for military check point, and signal fire communication than commercial and journey transportation. As Chugaryeong Pass was located in deep meandered gorge like valley, transportation is very difficult, so that military function is stronger than commercial and other ones. 'Chu' within Chugaryeong mean wild walnut tree, which is broad leaf tree under cold and wet climate and dominantly grown in the mountainous area of north Korea from central Korea including Gyeonggi and Gangwon Provinces, The distribution areas of village name including letter Chu are approximately same as ones of Korean wild walnut tree, so the areas are distributed from central to north Korea. Chugaryeong Pass is located in in-valley divide but the pass exactly not in divide ridge point. The exact divide is Bunsugae Pass is migrated southward from Chugaryeong Pass, because of headward erosion toward south of valley by Namdaecheon River running to East Sea.
