The Life and Thought of the Rev. Gusan Suyeon

This paper has for its object to review the life and thought of the Rev. Gusan Suyeon(1910~1983), a Korean high priest in modern times. Having succeeding to the Rev. Hyobong Haknul around Songkwang temple, the Rev. Gusan Suyeon laid a foundation for Korean Buddhism and left his foot-marks on the popularization and globalization of Korean Buddhism. All of them succeeded to the tradition of the National priest Bojo Jinul. The subject matters of this paper are as follows. Firstly, I classified his life into the four parts, the period of seeking after truth staying at home, the period of seeking after truth leaving home, the period of enlightenment and the line of succession to Buddhism. Secondly, I researched his cognition of the times and his important achievements. That is to say, I analyzed his thought, the second movement of Jeonghyeggyeolsa(定慧結社), the globalization of Korean Buddhism and the practice of living Buddhism. Trirdly, I made clear his main thought, Kanhwseon(看話禪). I thought that his Kanhwseon's characters are divided into these five parts, seeking for 'I', three principles of the both Samadhi(定) and Prajna(慧) and the world of truth. I thought that we should give attention to our hih priests in modern times to resuscitation the identity of Korean Buddhism and this paper is one of those work.
