미술교육에서의 질적 연구 방법의 탐색

Qualitative Research Approach in Art Education

질적 연구 방법은 현상학, 해석학, 실존주의, 인류학 등 철학적 사회학적 관점에 이론적 토대를 두기 때문에 여러 가지 개념으로 파악되기도 하지만, 대부분은 이 연구방법이 현상을 총체적, 심층적으로 기술하는데 유용하다는데 동의한다. 미술교육은 가시적이고 일반적인 진술을 목표로 하는 양적 연구 방법으로 파악하기 어려운 부분이 많다고 본다. 따라서 보다 깊고 본질에 다가가기 위한 방법으로 질적 연구방법이 다음과 같은 면에서 의미를 가진다. 첫째, 미술에서 중심적 개념인 미와 추의 문제와 같은 가치가 연구의 대상이 될 수 있다. 둘째, 미술과 같이 사물이나 대상이 드러나도록 하는 연구이다. 셋째, 미술과 같이 주관적 상태와 경험을 중시한다. 넷째, 미술과 같이 생생하고 직접적이고 즉각적인 체험을 중시한다. 다섯째, 미술을 위한 새로운 개념, 설명, 이론체계의 개발을 위해 적합하다.

This paper provides some Characteristics of qualitative research approach and points out the many reasons qualitative research inquiry is particularly well suited to the issues of art education. Because the arts have not ‘one truth’ or one ‘correct’ answer but many valid and possible interpretation(Hanlon, 1990; Herzog, 1990; Brooks & Brooks, 1993), arts are to a large degree related to an epistemology(Eisner, 1993), Phenomenology, and hermeneutics. Response to the arts are, therefore, an undeniable rich source for qualitative research studies. First, this research approach can offer an opportunity to explore the core values of art. such as personal, social, political, and aesthetic perspectives of diverse students. Second, this approach, like those who work in arts, puts a premium on the importance of holistic understanding. Third, this approach pays special attention to the subtleties and practice as well as to the uniqueness of outcomes. Fourth, this approach emphasizes the expression of feeling. Finally, this approach can be used for the structures of explanation and the development of theory in art and art education. When I discussed the characteristics of qualitative research approach that were valid for research method for art education, I didn't intended that this method should replace the quantitative method, rather I insisted that art educators should be open the new methodology, if it could help to solve the problems of art and art education.
