Constraints on Ex - China Sea - Air Intermodal Transport

Demand for sea-air intermodal transport is increasing between Chinese coastal cities and South Korea and is expected to make a substantial contribution to the role of South Korea as a logistics hub. Since China’s international airline networks are not well established, a large portion of their air cargoes is transferred at the ports of Incheon or Busan and then to transit at Incheon International Airport. In this study, the factor analysis was applied in order to find out constraints on the sea-air intermodal transport via South Korea. Based on the statistical results from the survey on the air carriers and the freight forwarders, a number of strategies were considered to develope South Korea into an intermodal transport hub and total logistics hub. It is believed that the strategies would take away thresholds in operating the sea-air transport business, and stimulate the competitiveness of the intermodal transport services in Korea.
